My name is Luke Hobson (Ed.D) and I’ll be your instructor for this course.
The purpose of this course is to educate you on the process of establishing a healthy mindset by changing your behaviors. This course is for anyone who has struggled with motivation, getting started, or maintaining a healthier lifestyle. By the time you finish this course, you will have learned how to
- Identify main issues with living a healthy lifestyle
- Create solutions to main issues by utilizing past experiences and prior knowledge through practicing reflection
- Describe past experiences to develop a reflection chart incorporating the main issue, smaller issues, and solutions to the issues
- Evaluate situations through scenario-based problems to determine solutions

Hi everyone and welcome to Learning Behavioral Change! I can’t begin to describe how excited I am that you are in this course. Why did I create this course? Our society today faces a crisis. According to a recent survey published in 2017, out of the 93 million people living in the United States, almost 40% are obese (Hales et al.). Other published findings have mentioned that 2 out of every 3 adults are overweight (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). That to me is unacceptable and I would like to reduce that number drastically.
From my experience, the average person seems to know what to do change their physiques. It’s no secret that the right amount of exercise and eating healthier foods will solve the problem, however, what’s not understood is the right approach to the problem. It’s not just using one tool like a way of eating or one style of exercising, but it’s the combination of having the right mindset and then utilizing the tool correctly. That’s what you will be taking away from this course.
At the conclusion of this course, you’ll be able to identify past experiences through practicing reflection. Through reflection you’ll develop what I call a reflection chart and this pertains to uncovering issues and creating solutions to these issues. You will also evaluate situations through a concept called scenario-based learning. These are real life examples of problems that you will solve to help you practice your newly learned skills. You will also be able to articulate and defend your reasoning. Having discussions with others is a significant portion of learning and being able to articulate your ideas will only further support your goals.
